black-lightning1Black Lightning – have you heard of him? You know, that DC comic book hero who can manipulate and generate  electricity? Yeah, understandable. But if you’re a Batman fan and have read about “The Outsiders”, then you’d probably already have a few pointers about him. But if you’re one who would rather watch than read, well we’ve got good news for you! The CW, home to the DC Television Universe is bringing Black Lightning into the fold.

After much controversy of his origins, Black Lightning, whose real name is Jefferson Pierce, made his debut in comics in April 1977. Once dubbed as “an insult” to all of comic books in existence, the Black Lighting character saw the light of day as “Black Bomber”, a white racist who turns into an African-American Superhero when subjected to stress. Things looked up for the character when he was rewritten by “Luke Cage” writer, Tony Isabella and relaunched as the hero we know now.

A series focusing on “Black Lightning” got a pilot order as confirmed by producer Greg Berlanti. Headlining the series is actor Cress Williams in the title role. The pilot will also see Jefferson Pierce’s two daughters Jennifer and Anissa, and Lynn, his ex-wife. Teased here is Williams in the Black Lightning costume which seems to borrow heavily from contemporary art of the source material.
