Nabil Chequeiq: Talent and Adaptability

by Joshua Diokno

Talent, technical know-how, and dedication. These three things are integral in today’s artistic discipline in the digital age. The acquisition and innovation within the arena can be characterized by speed and non-submission; both artists and laymen alike can easily be smitten by the changes if they are not up-to-date and constantly curious.

However, Mr. Nabil Chequeiq brings his relevance in the industry by putting another key trait on the table: ready and willing adaptability.

Indeed, Mr. Chequeiq has had experience with various platforms but not without the challenges that came along the way. From learning ZBrush to being able to establish his own style, he has been nothing short of artistic, consistent, and persevering. Indeed, Mr. Nabil Chequeiq is a figure in the digital arts that we should all watch out for.

Xeno Creatives (XC): ZBrush technology brought a lot to the industry. What processes did you have to learn to be skilled in it?

Nabil Chequeiq (NC): First you need to go to ZClassroom and look for all introduction videos and tips videos to understand the tool before and began to work with it. There is no magic formula; you have to practice and make your own formula.

XC: As a dedicated artist how did ZBrush help you further your art?

NC: ZBrush gives you the ability to give your work more realistic and artistic details. It lets you be more creative in your work.

XC: Was your craft really a passion to begin with, a hobby, or a mere job?

NC: At first, I was passionate by art and then I decided to make it a job. I believe that if you love what you’re doing, you will be good at it.

XC: Given your experience in the industry, what do you think is your edge as a 3D artist?

NC: As a 3D artist your edge is you imagination. If you have limited imagination you can’t be a good artist.

XC: Whom do you do you consider your influence(s)?

NC: Actually there are a lot of good artists out there whom I consider as influences—most of them are the traditional artists.

XC: So far, what were the challenges that you had encountered working in the 3D industry?

NC: Every project is a challenge for me; I try to do my best in each one. In every new project you have to adapt to the client and the new rules provided in terms of polygon, engine, and the texture size. For me the most challenging part is the art style.

XC: What is your most exciting project to date?

NC: The most exciting project that I have had to date is the “Conjuring” house–a game that I recently I worked in. We were a small team and everyone is doing a lot of things in their effort to work on a big game. This, apart from my personal project, the mermaid, I consider the “Conjuring” to be the most exciting one primarily because I learned a lot through this.

XC: Do you have any advice to aspiring artists?

NC: My advice to you guys is keep working and don’t give up even when you don’t notice the improvement of your work quickly. It takes time to level up. Share your personal work with other artists in the internet to have other feedback. And always keep in mind that with time and work, you will be the artist that you dream of.
